Peru is a mysterious and very beautiful land littered with ancient Inca ruins. The ancient Inca race live on through their astoundingly beautiful cities and temples often tucked away in almost impenetrable mountains or forests, the most famous being Machu Picchu. You can either hike the Inca Trail or take the train up to its mountainous perch. Peru also has gorgeous colonial cities like Cusco and Arequipa, the Amazonian rainforest to explore in the north and the mysterious Lake Titicaca. There are the intriguing Nazca Lines to visit as well as the incredible Colca Canyon.
Where to go?
Machu Picchu – the world famous ruined Inca city perched up high in the mountains that was lost to the outside world for hundreds of years.

Cusco – a beautiful city of Spanish colonial architecture with great restaurants and nightlife and museums.

The Inca Trail and Sacred Valley – On your way to Machu Picchu you will travel along the Sacred Valley and the Inca Trail and pass through more ruins and stunning mountain scenery. You can hike over two days or take the more luxurious option and travel by train.

Lake Titicaca – this sacred lake is home to the floating islands populated by the Uros people. The lake was important to the Incas and has a unique atmosphere.

Arequipa – this beautiful colonial city is overlooked by El Misti volcano and the Andes. It is a lovely city with lots of museums and galleries and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Nazca Lines – mysterious symbols have been created on the desert floor at Nazca and no one knows how or why to this day. Best seen from up in the air they are incredibly mysterious.
Colca Canyon – this spectacular canyon is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and home to the magnificent condor.

Amazon Rainforest – on the borders with Brazil Peru has its own slice of the Amazon rainforest with some great eco-lodges in the national reserves. A haven for wildlife Peru has the largest number of bird species and the third largest number of mammal species on earth!
When to go?
Peru’s high season is June – August as the best time for trekking the Inca Trail and visiting Machu Picchu. The days are clear and sunny but cold at night. The rainy months are November – April. However if you want to enjoy the coast then December to April are better. The best time to visit the jungle is the dry period between April – October.
